From Iconic Scottish Rum to Partnership with Burnobennie: The Dark Matter Story

Dark Matter Spiced Rum has become one of the UK’s most talked-about spiced rums — known for its bold flavour, handcrafted spice infusion, and its role in Scotland’s evolving spirits scene. Today, Burnobennie Distillery plays a key part in the ongoing production, bottling, and delivery of this beloved rum, helping bring the brand’s distinctive expression to drinkers across the UK and beyond.

A Pioneer in Scottish Spiced Rum

Originally founded in 2015 by brothers Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Distillers earned a reputation as Scotland’s first true rum distillery, producing molasses-based rum with a focus on authentic, hand-infused spices. The signature Dark Matter Spiced Rum combines fresh ginger, green peppercorns, allspice berries, and long pepper — resulting in a punchy, complex spirit with depth and warmth.

Unlike many mass-market spiced rums that rely on artificial flavourings, Dark Matter’s approach emphasises fresh ingredients and texture, creating a flavour profile that’s spicy yet balanced, and extremely versatile — perfect neat, over ice, or in contemporary cocktails.

A New Chapter Begins with Burnobennie Distillery

Following a period of financial difficulty and liquidation for Dark Matter Distillers, the brand was acquired by Ardent Spirits, a strategic decision that ensured its survival and growth.

Today, production of Dark Matter Spiced Rum has moved to Burnobennie Distillery in Banchory, Aberdeenshire, where the original spirit continues to be crafted — preserving its characteristic style while benefitting from Burnobennie’s modern facilities and contract distilling expertise.

This partnership has allowed the Dark Matter brand to remain active in the market, with Burnobennie not only distilling the spirit but also handling bottling, finishing, and distribution — ensuring that loyal customers continue to find Dark Matter on shelves and in online listings across the UK.

Why This Partnership Matters

The story of Dark Matter and Burnobennie is a great example of how dynamic the UK spirits industry can be:

  • Heritage meets capacity: A historic spirit with a passionate following now has the operational support to thrive.
  • Craft quality with professional execution: Burnobennie’s contract distilling and bottling service ensures consistency and quality.
  • Brand continuity: The transition preserved the character and identity of an iconic Scottish rum.

For brands and enthusiasts alike, the Dark Matter case illustrates how contract distilling partnerships can support continuity, growth, and broader distribution — all while retaining the essence of what made the spirit special in the first place.
